Divine Mercy Parish offers formal catechetical formation to Kindergarten through sixth grade students on Sunday mornings during the school year. Our parish strives to provide a comprehensive program using rich Catholic catechetical material taught by trained volunteer catechists. Our parish focuses on partnering with parents, the primary catechists of their children. Students in each grade level learn about the faith in an engaging, encouraging and safe environment. Divine Mercy Parish offers a two year Sacramental preparation program for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion beginning in first grade.
We have been blessed with the opportunity to start CGS here at Divine Mercy. CGS is a Montessori style of learning. Montessori learning is a student-led, self-paced (but still guided) learning style. It allows kids to experience the learning environment at their own pace. The children will take classes in an atrium. An atrium is the name for the classroom in CGS. It is filled with works which are the learning center items a child may do after they have been introduced. While CGS has three levels ( Level I (ages 3-6), Level II (ages 6-9, and Level III (ages 9-12), we have just started with our Level I atrium. Atriums are capped at 15 students. We have been able to set up two atriums to meet our needs. In the future we may move to multiple sessions offered too. We are always looking for people who wish to be trained to teach CGS. If you are interested you can register for classes at: CGS Registration. You must start with Level I part I, and then progress through the courses. If you are interested and it is a financial burden, please reach out to Gina at [email protected].
Registration for classes begins in August each year. If you are joining us during the school year, please contact the Youth Formation office to register.
Students in 3rd-6th grade preparing to receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion are encouraged to register and attend weekly classes with their peers. In addition, they are offered a special sacramental preparation course. Please reach out to Gina at [email protected] to get enrolled in this.
Volunteer catechists are called to be “echoers” of the Good News. Catechists should be practicing Catholics who participate fully in the communal worship and life of the Church and who have been prepared by appropriate catechetical teaching. Catechist’s children receive free tuition. Contact the Youth Formation office if you are interested in becoming a catechist.
To volunteer you must be Virtus trained. You can sign up here: https://virtusonline.org/virtus/.
Catechesis is a systematic, comprehensive passing on of the Catholic Faith. The word catechesis comes from the Greek word catechein, meaning “to echo”. Catechesis began as the oral passing on of what one heard or the echoing of what one had been told. This was the initial way the apostles communicated the way of Christ to the early followers of the Church. Very early on the Apostles began to write down this Good News of Jesus Christ. These writings became the first teaching texts of the Church. During the last 2000 years, the method for Catechesis has changed, but the message remains the same. Catechesis is the act of presenting the whole of the Faith; it is Christ’s message as it was heard from Him.
